Point of sale and exhibition security for gems and jewellery should be based on several components: protection against heists, respect for procedures, crime and attack prevention. - Protection against heists: this requires strong locks, uncopyable keys, continuous monitoring of access. - Respect for procedures: on the one hand, a display case must never remain open (simple risk prevention rules will prevent a display case being left open without surveillance) and, on the other hand, display cases must be quickly closed after opening (this can be achieved with delayed alarm; it happens automatically with electromagnetic or electric doors). - Crime and attack prevention: there are mechanical solutions, or one can use electromagnetic locks, which deter robberies. Innovative features can largely reduce the likelihood of theft: combined with a shock detector, or a secret remote control, a centralised electromagnetic lock emote control can lock down a group of display cases on first impact, without the possibility of a pre-set release. With such a system in place, there is little point in attempting a theft/aggressing sales staff and taking their keys, which become defunct in a lock-down situation.
